Abstract
The study wants to the objectives of the criticizing acts used by characters in Things Fall Apart. To describe the ways the characters use criticizing act, and to explain the reason the characters use criticizing acts as the references. The scope of this study is discourse analysis and the limitation of this study is criticizing acts. There are five kinds of criticizing acts, thry are constructive criticizing that happens 8 (eight) times, destructive criticizing 6 (sig) times, misleading criticizing 1 (one) time /once, absence criticizing 1 (one) time/once and request criticizing 1 (one) time/once. Then, the writer also find five ways of criticizing acts in all fragments, they are talking about action or things 7 (seven) times,. showing something positive 5 (five) times, changing criticizing to be correcting 3 (three) times, being specific 1 (one) time/once, and do not attack or insult 1 (one) time/once. Moreover, the writer also finds six reasons for using criticiizing acts in all fragments. They are to see a change 4 (four) time, to help someone improve 2 (two) time/twise, criticizing as responsibility and affection 2 (two) times/twice, to further the discussion 4 (four) times, the true attention 2 (two) times/twice, to further the discussion 4 (four) times, the true attention 2 (two) time/twice, and to vent frustration 1 (one) time/once.
